4 out of 5 stars High quality movement, low quality finish   August 24, 2010
Scarabei (Falls Church, VA)
Looks are subjective. I feel the watch is too blue and hard to dress up. I can only pull it off semi-successfully with white, blue and blue pinstripe shirts. On the other end of the continuum, wearing the watch with jeans, it feels too kiddy. I feel like a high school student with his first pseudo high end watch. I think it's the window. Although neat at first, comes off a little juvenile once the novelty wears off. Another interesting note, because the watch face is pretty large (42 mm) and the blue has a bit of Omega Seamaster glint to it, people WILL think it is an expensive time piece from a distance (personally verified).

Now on to the movement. The watch keeps great time! Power reserve is 48 hours (also personally verified). I don't notice substantial gains or losses in time in the 8 months I wore it. If you don't wear the watch and it stops, you can wind it up with the crown. So much better than some other automatics you have to shake once the power reserve runs out.

The finish has more to be desired. The blue outer bezel scratches easily. I had a scratch on the bezel within the first week of wear. But "whatever," for a cheap watch, the scratches give it character. The stainless steel, however, is a lot more durable. The bracelet WILL get scratched, but that is any bracelet. Best solution is to pick up a fine nail polishing block from your local pharmacy and use that. Works like a charm on brushed steel finish.

Wants - I didn't realize how much I relied on the date window in my other watches until I got this watch. Trying to sign documents and looking at the watch for the date but not finding it can get annoying.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing   July 19, 2010

Well, I'm very happy with this product, no complaint about it, the blue color look great, and I love how it look the mechanism in that little hole.
I think that is good product and worth it for the price.
Keep time with no issues, (if you wear it daily basis) of course..

5 out of 5 stars Very nice watch, great buy for the price   March 17, 2010

I've owned this watch for about 3 months and it has held up very well in every way. The watch keeps very good time and the movement is very quiet. The blue dial a is very tasteful blue with a yellow sweeping second hand that really compliments the blue dial face. The open heart on this watch is a nice feature and receives a lot of attention from anyone who catches a look at it. The band is well constructed and is not too big or chunky. For this price point ($180-$220) your are getting a watch that looks and feels the part of a watch that costs 3x as much. I am very pleased with this watch and will no doubt add another Bulova watch to my collection in the near future. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Marine Star Automatic   December 14, 2009

This is my second marine star and it is similar in weight and feel to the electronic Marine Star Chronograph. I had been on the lookout for a well priced automatic for a long time, and when this came along in a great deal I jumped on it. The blue face is very close in color to the other blue Bulova Chronographs, but it's different enough to not feel like I'm wearing the same watch. As you can see from the picture, there is a small round window between the 8 o'clock mark and center post that has a view into the inner workings of the watch. When you hold the watch steady, you can see a couple of the mechanisms oscillating back and forth, along with the barely twitching sweep of the second hand. There appears to be about 5 "ticks" in the second hand for every second moved, so it is not an entirely smooth sweep. If you shake the watch a little bit, you can also see the winding mechanism moving back and forth in the background.

Taking the watch off and looking at the back, the whole back face is a transparent window into the inside of the watch. The winder mechanism is closest to the window and it moves around in a circle if you gently shake the watch. If you hold the watch up to the light you can see straight through and out the small front window. You also get a pretty good view of one of the gears marching around in a circle, along with several other notched wheels that are moving much slower.

Overall, you definitely have a sense of a high precision mechanical instrument in your hand (or on your wrist). There is no calendar or any other secondary function so the watch is just about the time and how it's keeping it. The outer wheel does turn for chronograph timing if you wish.

The winding of the watch seems to last about a day and a half. After I didn't wear the watch for two days, I had to restart the watch and reset the time. When I skipped wearing the watch for a day, it still had the correct time 24 hours after not having been worn.

Overall I'm very happy with the watch. I've only had it a couple of weeks so I can't speak to its longevity, but so far it's behaving exactly as I had hoped. There was a note in the box indicating that the watch mechanism was from Japan and the band was from Hong Kong. I hadn't really looked at Bulova much until I got my first Marine Star about a year ago, but it has held up extremely well also, so I've been very happy with the brand as well so far.
